Search & Rescue

One system, decomposed three ways: by function, by placement, and by authority. Move the constraints, then try to move authority with them. It will refuse — and the refusal is the lesson.

narrative

A hiker is overdue, and the light is going.

Earlier in the day a wildfire took the valley's one cell tower. There is no signal out — no way to hand the heavy computing to a distant data centre, no one upstream to ask. Whatever finds this person tonight has to run on what stands at the trailhead: a few small drones and one command truck.

And the clock does not just tick. It tightens. The temperature is falling toward the range where an injured person can no longer keep warm. The drones' batteries are draining. Every minute widens the ground the hiker could have reached.

Core
The central cloud/datacenter
Regional operational edge
Persistent regional layer outside the incident but closer than the core; federates across mobile nodes, enforces residency/attestation, preserves provenance
Mobile node
The forward operating unit at the incident — a rugged compute node with the operators
